Dobson initially went into the mining industry, buying a company with a business partner in 1986 for £9m and selling it three years later for £77m. In 2005 Dobson, a farmer's son from Galashiels, sold a stake in Manchester United to the Glazer family for £51m – a £31m profit in three years – and he also has holdings in quoted oil and mining operations. Last year saw the merger with another gold company of Canadian-listed Kirkland Lake Gold, which he founded and where he served as chairman until 2015. We keep Monaco-based Dobson, 69, at £166m.
