The Walker family, led by Joe, 79, has been making shortbread since 1898 when Joseph Walker used a £50 loan to open a bakery, to sell the finest shortbread in the world. Despite margin pressures, the Speyside-based Walkers Shortbread achieved a modest 1.8% increase in sales in 2015 to £139.4m, with the export market accounting for 41%. Profits also rose, hitting £12m, and with nearly £81m net assets the business is worth £130m. We add £45m for past salaries and dividends.
