It was a pledge that came back to haunt Ayrshire-based Hunter, 56 yesterday. After making £252m in 1998 from selling his Sports Division chain to JJB Sports for £290m, in 2007 he announced his plan to give £1bn to charity. “I did want to give my money away,” he joked after the financial crisis of 2008 hit. “I just didn’t expect it to be in quite this way." Hunter lost an estimated £250m, knocking him out of the Rich List for six years. He has since become an astute property investor, working with Nick Leslau (qv) at Secure Income Reit. In 2015-16 his West Coast Capital operation’s assets grew to £134.7m. Hunter, who started out in business selling trainers from a van in 1984, has given £50m in donations through his Hunter Foundation and won the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2013.
